About Bushwick Leaders’ High School
Bushwick Leaders’ High School for Academic Excellence is a small community high school located on the corner of Bushwick and DeKalb Avenues in the heart of Bushwick, Brooklyn. Our historic building sits on a beautiful green campus that occupies a whole city block. In 2003, our founding principal Cathy Reilly, who retired in 2021, converted the building into Bushwick Leaders’ High School.
The majority of our diverse student population comes from the surrounding communities of Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, East Williamsburg and Ridgewood. At Bushwick Leaders High School, we believe every student is an asset who brings a tremendous amount of value to the academic experience. This is why we welcome all students regardless of their culture, language or varied identities (e.g. race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status, socioeconomic status) to be a part of our school community.
In order to support our students in achieving high levels of academic excellence we have embraced Project Based Learning (PBL) and a flipped classroom model as our primary methods of instructional delivery. We also prioritize Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CR-SE), Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL) and postsecondary success through our academic program. Our Partnerships
East Brooklyn Congregations – EBC is the Brooklyn affiliate of Industrial Areas Foundation. It is a multi-denominational union of various congregations and community groups from all over Eastern Brooklyn. EBC was instrumental in the creation of our school and continues to be an active force in our school’s development.
Good Shepherd partners with many Brooklyn public schools to target children and young people with school-related difficulties. We help young people to stay in school and strengthen their academic skills by offering comprehensive services to students and their families to address problems interfering with academic performance.
OneGoal Graduation is a partner organization that works with our faculty and staff to ensure college and postsecondary planning, preparation, and support are integral components of the high school experience for our students. The OneGoal team works alongside our teachers to bridge the transition from high school to each student’s chosen postsecondary path through.
Founded in 1979, the Center for Supportive Schools (CSS) helps schools become places where students want to be. CSS is driven by the vision that one day, all children will thrive in schools that graduate them prepared for the rigors of college and lives filled with meaningful work, active citizenship, and personal fulfillment.
